Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam has described the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 as a mixed experience — both in terms of the team’s performance and his own individual showing.
Speaking to Geo News in Lahore, the former skipper of the Pakistan cricket team noted that while Zalmi initially aimed to establish a winning combination and secured two victories, they now need to find consistency.
“Half of the tournament has concluded, and we’ve experienced losses in phases — sometimes due to batting collapses, and other times due to bowling issues,” Babar stated.
He further added, “Our fielding, in particular, hasn’t been up to par. Regardless of the match conditions, we must adhere to our strategies and ensure we don’t drop catches or lose wickets at crucial junctures.”
Babar also acknowledged the expectations of fans who want him to have longer stays at the crease.
“I find enjoyment in even brief innings, but I haven’t been able to play the long innings that are expected of me. I make mistakes and strive to rectify them in the subsequent game, although new errors do occur — that’s the nature of cricket. The crucial aspect is maintaining focus, and I remain very focused,” he said.
He continued, “I play according to my strengths and understanding of the evolving game of cricket. I am aware of the discussions surrounding strike rates and aggressive play.”
“I don’t feel the need to prove my capabilities to anyone — my track record speaks for itself. I always adapt my game to the specific situation and the team’s requirements. I am fully cognizant of my strike rate,” he added.
Does Babar Bat at His Preferred Position?
Babar clarified that he has never insisted on batting at a particular position in the order.
“No one has experienced as many position changes as I have. I’ve batted at number six and even opened the innings. Whether it’s for my franchise or the national team, I always play where the team needs me. I’ve never refused to bat at a certain number out of fear of underperforming,” he stated.
Babar emphasized that he believes in demonstrating his abilities through performance rather than making verbal declarations.
“I am capable of expressing myself verbally, but my elders have instilled in me the importance of respecting others. My primary responsibility is to perform on the field. I work diligently and am never content with my performance. Even when I’ve achieved the number one ranking, my focus remains on looking ahead and considering the needs of my country.”
Additionally, Babar revealed that decisions regarding his T20 career are in the hands of the selectors and coaches.
“It’s not my prerogative whether I play or am rested. My duty is to perform — whether it’s in T20s, ODIs, or Test cricket. I was informed that I would be rested from T20s; we will see what the selectors decide next.”
Moreover, he stressed that the notion of ODIs becoming irrelevant due to the popularity of T20s is “not true.”
“The 50-over format tests your patience, and we are now witnessing scores exceeding 350. ODIs have always held a special significance for me, filled with positive memories and performances,” Babar said.
‘Top-Quality League’
Furthermore, the 30-year-old batter emphasized that the PSL is a world-class league and he does not believe its standard has declined.
“Interest levels may fluctuate from match to match, but the overall quality remains high. Foreign players are eager to participate. The bowling quality here is excellent — each team boasts bowlers who can consistently bowl over 145 kph,” he stated.
While Babar acknowledged the love and support of his fans, he admitted that their expectations do create a degree of pressure.
He said: “Their love and support motivate me to perform well in front of them. It gives me confidence when fans appreciate me wherever I go. When the crowd chants ‘Babar, Babar,’ I thank Allah for the respect I have received.”
“I used to ride a bicycle to the stadium, dreaming of playing there one day. Now, the same crowd cheers for me. I remember starting out as a ball picker and later playing as a bowler. I am truly grateful to Allah and feel a greater responsibility not to let my fans down.”
He added that he even enjoys the memes created about him, viewing them as a sign of affection from his supporters.
