According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is currently developing two new versions of its Vision Pro headset. The technology giant appears to be addressing significant criticisms of its first-generation spatial computing device, while also expanding the product line with specialized variations.
Gurman disclosed in his latest Power On newsletter that Apple is working on a less expensive version of the Vision Pro that will also be lighter than the current model. The initial headset, which debuted in 2024 for $3,299, was criticized for its high price and substantial weight of approximately 650 grams (nearly 1 kilogram with the external battery).
The second model under development reflects a shift in the Vision Pro ecosystem: a wired headset designed exclusively for use with Mac computers. Unlike previous designs with transparent lenses, this device will retain the enclosed design of the existing Vision Pro while focusing on ultra-low latency performance. According to Gurman, this customized model would be targeted at professional applications such as surgical imaging and flight simulation, where rapid response time is crucial.
Despite a mixed market reception, Apple has continued to invest in the Vision Pro platform. While the original headset was introduced in key regions such as the United States, United Kingdom, China, and Japan, it has yet to be marketed in other large markets like India. Some early adopters reportedly returned their devices, expressing dissatisfaction with various aspects of the product.
The weight issue appears to be a primary focus of Apple’s redesign efforts. The company has previously addressed this concern indirectly by offering additional support straps for the original Vision Pro. Initial plans apparently included minor upgrades, such as replacing the current M2 processor with the future M5, but recent information suggests a more extensive overhaul is planned.
Despite early setbacks, these advancements demonstrate Apple’s commitment to its spatial computing vision, having reportedly spent billions of dollars on the platform. Rather than scaling back, the company seems to be broadening its strategy with models aimed at different price points and usage scenarios.
The timeline for these new Vision Pro versions is unknown, as is the price of the rumored more affordable form.
