The Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) is embarking on a significant environmental sustainability initiative by converting the Mehmood Booti dumpsite into Pakistan’s inaugural carbon credit project.
This 43-acre landfill, which has accumulated 13 million tons of waste since 1997, has been a source of severe pollution and methane emissions. The undertaking aims not only to mitigate environmental hazards but also to integrate the site into Pakistan’s green economy.
With a PKR 5 billion investment, RUDA will rehabilitate the site by capturing methane emissions and converting them into usable energy, thereby reducing carbon output by one million tons over 15 years, equivalent to the annual removal of 22,000 cars.
In alignment with global carbon credit mechanisms, the project is projected to generate 100,000 tons of carbon credits annually, contributing PKR 2 billion in annual revenue. Furthermore, the site will be repurposed into an urban forest and solar park, fostering biodiversity and clean energy.
RUDA’s Director of Environment and Climate Change, Ms. Ahad Yousaf Khan, emphasized the significance of this initiative during a media briefing, stating that the project is a pivotal development for Pakistan’s climate strategy.
By reducing emissions through carbon credit mechanisms, we are converting waste into a valuable economic and environmental asset.
RUDA is dedicated to pioneering sustainable urban solutions that adhere to global best practices, she added, this landmark initiative underscores RUDA’s commitment to reshaping urban landscapes with advanced climate solutions, setting a precedent for sustainable development in Pakistan.
Under the vision of RUDA CEO Imran Amin, RUDA is taking decisive steps to reclaim and repurpose this land into a productive urban asset.
The PKR 5 billion allocation demonstrates RUDA’s commitment to sustainable urban transformation, ensuring that Lahore’s development is in line with global climate action and economic resilience.
