A rare monkey species facing a high risk of extinction has been born at a zoo in East Sussex.
According to BBC, a Sulawesi crested macaque baby was born in January at Drusillas Park, Alfriston.
A zoo spokesperson expressed their excitement, stating that they were “especially thrilled”, as the baby’s parents—Ahsoka, a shy mother, and Moteck, a big-personality father—initially struggled to bond.
Head keeper Gemma Romanis shared, “After some perseverance, they’ve worked things out, and the result has been the birth of a wonderful new infant.”
Sulawesi crested macaques are native to Indonesia and are recognized for their black fur, amber eyes, and bright pink bottoms.
The zoo emphasized that this birth is crucial for the survival of the endangered species.
Romanis further added, “The baby, which we are 95% sure is female, is thriving. It’s heartwarming to see first-time mum Ahsoka embracing motherhood with a newfound confidence that excites us all.”
She concluded, “We’re all really proud to play our part in keeping this beautiful primate from extinction.”
Sulawesi crested macaques are among the 20+ endangered and rare species housed at the East Sussex animal park.
