As the NFL offseason progresses, discussions are intensifying regarding which Detroit Lions players might sign long-term contracts with the team.
Two key players under consideration for contracts are Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams.
Both players performed well during the season, although Hutchinson missed several games after suffering a broken left fibula in Week 6.
According to reports, Detroit is being advised to delay offering long-term contracts to both Hutchinson and Williams for now.
As per HeavySports, NFL analyst Mike Payton suggests that instead of prioritizing Hutchinson and Williams, the Lions should focus on securing a contract extension for safety Kerby Joseph.
He explains that since Hutchinson and Williams were first-round draft picks, the Lions can opt to extend their contracts next year using their fifth-year options.
“That way, they can have a strong season and maximize their earnings. Right now, the Lions wouldn’t be offering them top-dollar due to these factors,” Payton added.
Payton also highlights that Baltimore Ravens’ All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton is set for a contract extension and is expected to become the highest-paid safety in the NFL.
If the Lions finalize a deal with Kerby Joseph before Hamilton signs, they could secure Joseph at a lower cost.
