Rawalpindi: Incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has ordered the immediate expulsion of party leader Sher Afzal Marwat due to his repeated violations of party discipline, sources revealed.
The directive was issued during a meeting between PTI leaders and the former prime minister at Adiala Jail during the hearing of the GHQ attack case.
PTI leaders, including Omar Ayub Khan, Shibli Faraz, and Senator Ali Zafar, met Imran Khan and complained about Marwat’s conduct at the Swabi public gathering last week.
Controversy at Swabi Rally
On February 8, PTI organized a protest rally in Swabi against alleged election rigging, where Marwat was reportedly not allowed to come on stage. However, he managed to deliver a speech after being invited by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur.
During his speech, Marwat cryptically stated, “Bad people become helpful in bad times, but some good people in good times remain silent.” Pointing towards Gandapur, he added that the chief minister would speak on behalf of people like him.
Imran Khan’s Strong Reaction
Sources reported that Imran Khan was furious over Marwat’s unauthorized speech at the rally and ordered party leaders to immediately issue a notification terminating his basic party membership.
Additionally, PTI leadership is expected to demand Marwat’s resignation as a Member of the National Assembly (MNA).
Previous Show-Cause Notices
Last month, PTI issued a show-cause notice to Marwat for violating party discipline by making remarks against the party’s Secretary General Salman Akram Raja.
He was served another show-cause notice in May 2023, which led to the cancellation of his basic party membership. However, Imran Khan later pardoned him, and no further action was taken.
Marwat had previously criticized PTI’s negotiations with the coalition government and questioned Raja’s legitimacy as secretary general, as he had not contested intra-party elections.
