Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Irfan Siddiqui has claimed that the letter written by jailed PTI founder Imran Khan to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Asim Munir is proof of his desperation and frustration.
Background of the Letter
In his statement on Wednesday, Senator Siddiqui termed Imran’s letter a charge sheet, recalling that the former prime minister had previously sent a letter to the army chief via then-president Arif Alvi in 2023, but it received no response.
“They [PTI] did not receive a reply then, and they will not get one this time either,” Siddiqui asserted.
Key Points of the Letter
Two days ago, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and lawyer Faisal Chaudhry confirmed that Imran Khan had written a six-point letter, urging the army chief to review policies and explaining the reasons behind the growing gap between the military and the public.
However, security sources claimed that no such letter had been received by COAS Munir and that the military only learned of it through media reports.
Political Context
The letter comes at a time when PTI leaders—Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan—have already met the army chief to discuss the overall security situation.
Additionally, PTI had ended negotiations with the PML-N-led coalition government last month, citing two key demands:
- Formation of judicial commissions on the events of May 9, 2023, and November 24-27, 2023.
- Release of all political prisoners, including Imran Khan.
Major Points Raised in the Letter
According to lawyer Faisal Chaudhry, the six main issues highlighted in Imran Khan’s letter include:
- Alleged electoral fraud and the promotion of money launderers in politics.
- Impact of the 26th Constitutional Amendment on judicial independence and the rule of law.
- Misuse of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) to suppress opposition and social media voices.
- Terrorism charges, raids, and alleged state repression against PTI workers.
- The role of intelligence agencies and their alleged interference in political affairs.
- Economic issues, including artificial rupee valuation, low investment, and internet shutdowns.
Implications and Future Outcomes
In the letter, Imran Khan urged the army chief to reconsider policies and called for the formation of a judicial commission.
It remains to be seen whether this letter will lead to any concrete developments or will simply be viewed as a political maneuver.
