In a hotel near Washington, the US Democrats have chosen their new leader, whose task will be to rebuild the party after their recent presidential defeat and devise a strategy to challenge Republican leader Donald Trump.
Members of the Democratic National Committee are reviewing their loss in November and selecting a new chairperson responsible for drawing up plans for the future.
Katherine Jeanes, Deputy Digital Director of the North Carolina Democratic Party, remarked that this is not like a game of chess, but a guerrilla war in political form.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore warned that the party cannot “hide until the next general election.”
Shasti Conrad, chair of the party’s Washington state branch, emphasized that many Americans have lost faith and that the Democrats must show they know how to improve lives when in power.
Among the leading candidates for the party’s leadership are Ben Wikler and Ken Martin, party chairmen of Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Wikler said, “The soul of the Democratic Party is the fight for working people.”
Despite both candidates not being widely known, they focus on renewing the connection with working-class Americans and making the party more active in all 50 states, even those in conservative regions.
Conrad added that the party must learn how to handle Trump’s unpredictable moves and avoid being like a “dog chasing the car.”
