Rawalpindi – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has written a letter to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir, urging him to change policies, his lawyer Faisal Chaudhry revealed on Monday.
Speaking to the media outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, where Khan is imprisoned, Chaudhry said, “Imran Khan, as a former prime minister and party leader, has written a six-point letter to the army chief.”
According to Chaudhry, Khan, who was removed from power in 2022 through a parliamentary vote, expressed solidarity with the military in its fight against terrorism, acknowledging the sacrifices of soldiers.
Khan also urged the entire nation to stand with the armed forces.
The six key points of the letter are:
- Electoral Transparency – Khan highlighted concerns over “fraudulent elections” and the alleged promotion of money launderers.
- Judicial Independence – The impact of the 26th Constitutional Amendment on judicial freedom and the rule of law.
- PECA (Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act) – Criticism of the law being used to suppress dissent and crack down on social media.
- Crackdown on PTI Workers – Cases of terrorism charges, raids, and forceful measures against PTI workers, as well as threats to journalists damaging the army’s reputation.
- Role of Intelligence Agencies – Raising concerns over intelligence operations.
- Economic Issues – Accusations against the government for weakening the economy, artificially controlling the rupee’s value, low investment, and internet shutdowns.
Chaudhry added that Khan urged the army chief to reconsider policies and called for the formation of a judicial commission.
Separately, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan dismissed speculation about a “policy shift” following the letter, clarifying that Imran Khan wrote it in his capacity as a former prime minister.
He added that the letter’s text would be made public today.
Quoting Khan, Barrister Gohar said that PTI does not seek chaos, as “Pakistan Army is ours.”
This letter comes weeks after PTI leaders – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan – met the army chief to discuss the security situation.
It also holds significance as the former ruling party ended negotiations with the PML-N-led government last month. PTI had two key demands:
- The formation of judicial commissions on the events of May 9, 2023, and November 24-27.
- The release of all political prisoners, including Imran Khan.
In December last year, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry had stated that no political leader’s pursuit of power should be more important than Pakistan’s interests.
“All political parties and leaders are respectable to us, but no individual, their politics, or their desire for power is above Pakistan,” he said during a media briefing.
