Movement of Chinese Nationals Restricted for Security Reasons: IG
Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon stated that no complaints of extortion involving Chinese nationals have been reported in the province.
This statement follows a petition filed in the Sindh High Court (SHC) by six Chinese investors seeking protection from alleged police harassment and extortion in Karachi.
The petitioners expressed dissatisfaction with the local police’s “culture of bribery,” noting that they might relocate to Lahore or return to China if the issues persist.
The IG emphasized that due to security concerns, the movement of Chinese nationals has been significantly restricted, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for their safety are being strictly enforced.
“We cannot compromise on the safety of our Chinese brothers,” the IG assured, highlighting the importance of protecting foreign nationals.
However, the tightened security measures have impacted local sponsors, who face challenges in supporting Chinese residents as they did before.
The police are also investigating legal and judicial matters involving Chinese nationals to address related concerns.
In their petition, the Chinese businessmen alleged that police officials demanded bribes at the airport and delayed their transportation under the pretense of arranging bulletproof vehicles. They also claimed they were deprived of their right to free movement and business activities.
The SHC has sought a response from the Sindh IG and other parties within four weeks.
