The UK’s most powerful supercomputer, Isambard-AI, utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to develop new medications and vaccines.
With a £225 million investment, this supercomputer will become fully operational by the summer, and according to Professor Simon McIntosh-Smith, it will position the UK to be globally competitive.
McIntosh-Smith mentioned that the supercomputer is already being used for creating vaccines for Alzheimer’s, heart disease, emphysema, and various cancers.
AI models simulate how drugs work inside the human body at the molecular level, making drug discovery much faster and more efficient.
Professor McIntosh-Smith explained, “Instead of testing every possible combination, AI quickly narrows down the most promising options.”
This technology could save millions of lives and is expected to be one of the top ten fastest supercomputers globally. It will also benefit local homes and businesses by utilizing its waste energy for heating.
