Cause of the Plane Crash Still Unknown, South Korean and US Investigators Continue Probe
Seoul: South Korea’s transport ministry reported on Saturday that the black boxes of the Jeju Air flight that killed 179 people stopped recording four minutes before the crash.
The Boeing 737-800, flying from Thailand to Muan, South Korea, crashed at Muan airport on December 29, after attempting a belly landing and slamming into a concrete barrier, causing an explosion. This incident is the deadliest aviation disaster in South Korea’s history.
The transport ministry stated that “analysis revealed that both the CVR and FDR data were not recorded during the four minutes leading up to the aircraft’s collision with the localizer.”
Investigators have yet to determine the exact cause of the crash, which has prompted widespread mourning in South Korea.
The investigation has pointed to a possible bird strike, malfunctioning landing gear, and the runway barrier as potential factors.
