Pakistani-American’s advocacy and actions are embodied in his message for peace
Dr. Suleman Lalani is the first Muslim and South Asian legislator elected to the Texas House of Representatives. In 2022, he was elected to represent District 76, including Sugar Land, Stafford, Richmond, and Meadows Place. In 2024, he was re-elected for a second term. Dr. Lalani is the only primary care physician in the Texas Legislature, quadruple board-certified in Geriatric Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and Internal Medicine.
Dr. Lalani serves both patients and policies in his dual roles, having authored 143 pieces of legislation during his first term, addressing issues like healthcare access, mental health, education, and senior care. Of these, 36 bills became law, significantly impacting the lives of millions in Texas.
His legislative accomplishments include securing funding for health emergency preparedness and the Family Practice Residency Program, which aims to address physician shortages in the state.
Mental healthcare was another priority, and Dr. Lalani’s efforts led to increased access to mental health resources for students and expanded care capacity through Senate Bills 26 and 532.
As the first Muslim legislator in Texas, Dr. Lalani celebrated significant cultural and religious milestones, including Texas Muslim Capitol Day, the First Iftar at the Capitol, and recognition of May as Muslim Heritage Month.
Dr. Lalani’s advocacy extends beyond state borders, as he has used his platform to call for a ceasefire in Palestine and advocate for peace and human rights, marking him as a leader for Muslim and allied voices.
Who is Dr. Suleman Lalani?
Born in Pakistan, Dr. Suleman Lalani graduated from Sindh Medical College and continued his medical education in the U.S., completing his fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He currently practices in the Greater Houston area, with a focus on senior care.
