Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Munir Akram, expressed concern over North Korea’s recent ballistic missile test and called for diplomatic engagement to address the challenges of the Korean Peninsula.
Speaking at the UN Security Council, Akram emphasized Pakistan’s support for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the revival of dialogue among the concerned parties. He described the missile tests as harmful to regional and international peace and security.
“Pakistan strongly supports the calls for the revival of talks among relevant parties,” Akram said, adding that “Pakistan opposes any further nuclear weapons testing in Korea or elsewhere.”
The missile launch, reportedly a new type of intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile, was detected by South Korea’s military. The test coincided with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s meetings in Seoul, South Korea.
The UN’s Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari warned that North Korea’s actions undermine the global non-proliferation framework. Khiari highlighted that no airspace or maritime safety notifications were issued by Pyongyang before the launch.
North Korean Ambassador Song Kim defended the missile tests as part of his country’s strategic deterrent development. He criticized the US and South Korea’s policies, holding them responsible for escalating tensions.
Ambassador Akram called on the UN Security Council to play its role in reducing tensions and ensuring peace and security in the region.
