The Biden administration is negotiating with the Afghan Taliban to swap three Americans detained in Afghanistan for at least one high-profile detainee held at Guantanamo Bay, according to reports.
The US is seeking the release of Ryan Corbett, George Glezmann, and Mahmood Habibi, who were seized in 2022, in exchange for Muhammad Rahim al-Afghani, a high-level al-Qaeda operative transferred to Guantanamo in 2008.
Afghani is believed to have ties to former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
The talks have been ongoing since July, with sources confirming discussions involving White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan at a classified briefing.
The report follows the Biden administration’s recent move to send 11 Guantanamo detainees to Oman, significantly reducing the prison population as part of efforts to close the facility.
The US military thanked the government of Oman and other partners for their cooperation in reducing detainee numbers responsibly and ultimately shutting down Guantanamo Bay.
