With the intensity of seasonal cold in China, there has been a rise in flu and respiratory illnesses, leading to overcrowded hospitals. Viral videos on social media have highlighted the congestion in hospitals, raising concerns about the spread of a new pandemic, the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV).
What is HMPV? Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that causes symptoms similar to the flu, such as common cold symptoms. While it is usually mild, it can cause serious complications like pneumonia, particularly in children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The virus was first discovered in 2001 and spreads through respiratory droplets (coughing, sneezing) or contaminated surfaces.
Symptoms of HMPV:
- Coughing
- Runny or blocked nose
- Sore throat
- Fever
In severe cases, it can cause:
- Difficulty breathing
- Inflammation of the lungs (pneumonia)
- Severe asthma in adults
Treatment and Precautions: There is no vaccine or antiviral treatment available for HMPV. Treatment generally focuses on controlling the symptoms, such as:
- Adequate hydration
- Rest
- Fever-reducing medications (as advised by a doctor)
How to Stay Safe:
- Wash hands regularly
- Avoid touching your face
- Wear a mask in crowded places
- Stay at home if you feel unwell
The HMPV virus usually lasts for 3 to 6 days, and most people recover without complications. However, those at higher risk should seek medical help if symptoms worsen.
