ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and India exchanged lists of their respective nuclear installations and facilities, the Foreign Office (FO) said on Wednesday.
This annual exchange was conducted under the Agreement on Prohibition of Attacks Against Nuclear Installations and Facilities. Pakistan handed over its list to the Indian High Commission representative at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad.
Simultaneously, India’s Ministry of External Affairs provided its list to Pakistan’s High Commission representative in New Delhi.
FO spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch stated, “Signed on December 31, 1988, the agreement requires both countries to exchange lists of nuclear installations on January 1 each year.”
Since its enforcement on January 27, 1991, the two countries have been exchanging these lists annually since January 1, 1992, she added.
Exchange of Prisoner Lists
Both nations also exchanged lists of prisoners through diplomatic channels as part of the 2008 Consular Access Agreement.
Under this agreement, both countries must exchange prisoner lists every year on January 1 and July 1.
Pakistan provided a list of 266 Indian prisoners (49 civilians and 217 fishermen) to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
India, in turn, shared a list of 462 Pakistani prisoners (381 civilians and 81 fishermen) detained in its jails with Pakistan’s High Commission.
Request for Release of Pakistani Prisoners
Pakistan urged India to release and repatriate all Pakistani prisoners — including 52 civilians and 56 fishermen — who have completed their sentences and whose national status has been verified.
“The Government of India has also been urged to ensure the safety and well-being of all Pakistani or believed-to-be Pakistani prisoners awaiting release,” the statement read.
Additionally, Islamabad requested consular access for 38 missing defense personnel from the 1965 and 1971 wars, the FO spokesperson added.
