Bangladesh has formally requested the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India to face judicial proceedings. Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry advisor, Touhid Hossain, stated that a verbal note was sent to India, expressing Bangladesh’s desire to have Hasina returned.
Hasina is accused of embezzling $5 billion from the construction of Bangladesh’s first nuclear plant, Rooppur, which is being funded by Russia. The investigation is being conducted by Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission.
Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and niece, Tulip Siddiq, a British Member of Parliament, are also facing inquiries related to this case. Hasina fled to India in August 2024 after the fall of her government and has sought refuge there.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Hasina’s son have not immediately responded to Bangladesh’s request.
