The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced a significant development, allowing individuals to register Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) using their mobile numbers. This move is intended to streamline the VPN registration process and provide better support to the IT sector. According to the PTA, over 31,000 VPNs have already been registered.
To register a VPN, users must fill out an online form on the PTA website, providing essential details such as their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC), company registration information, and taxpayer status. Freelancers are also required to submit supporting documents, such as proof of affiliation with a project or company. Applicants must also specify the required IP address for VPN connectivity.
The move follows security concerns raised by the government about unregistered VPNs. Initially, the PTA planned to block all unregistered VPNs, but it later decided to extend the registration deadline, allowing users more time to comply with the new requirements.
