New Delhi: India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the U.S. State Department and “deep state” elements of conspiring to destabilize India in collaboration with investigative journalists and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi.
The BJP alleged that the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) is funded by the U.S. State Department and other entities, serving as a tool for anti-India narratives. The OCCRP, however, has stated that it operates independently and is not influenced by any political entity, including the U.S. government.
These allegations come amid heightened scrutiny of India’s policies and opposition demands for accountability regarding allegations against businessman Gautam Adani. The BJP has also criticized opposition parties for exploiting these issues to attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The controversy highlights the strain in India-U.S. relations, despite recent efforts to strengthen bilateral ties. Both nations have expressed commitment to their partnership, but these allegations could add tension to the relationship.
