Islamabad: Omar Ayub Khan, leader of the opposition and member of the National Assembly from PTI, criticized the government for a lack of transparency regarding a recent briefing on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. He argued that there was nothing secret about the IMF program, as journalists had already reported all the details, but the government wanted to avoid answering parliamentary questions by keeping the briefing closed. Ayub pointed out that during his time as a minister, such sessions were never held in-camera for finance or energy sectors.
He added that committee members raised concerns regarding the commitments made with the IMF, questioning tax targets from agriculture and asset declarations by government employees. Ayub also claimed that the government did not consult the committee about the IMF staff mission’s recent visit. Furthermore, he criticized the government’s privatization targets for public services, calling them unrealistic, and expressed grave concerns about the state of the economy.
