Ariana Grande recently shared a heartwarming moment with her 99-year-old grandmother, Marjorie “Nonna” Grande, by flying to her hometown of Boca Raton, Florida, just for one day to watch the highly anticipated film Wicked. Grande, who plays Glinda the Good Witch in the movie, made the special trip on Monday to enjoy the film alongside her Nonna, who celebrated her 99th birthday in October.
On her Instagram Stories, Grande posted a picture of herself sitting next to her grandmother and her brother Frankie in a movie theater. She wrote, “Flew to Boca for a day to watch with Nonna,” adding that they watched Wicked at the very movie theater she used to frequent every weekend while growing up.
Grande also took a moment to shout out her boyfriend, Ethan Slater, who plays Boq in the movie, for taking the photo. She shared a joyful video of her Nonna smiling while watching Grande’s performance of “Popular” on the big screen, along with the fun comment, “Thrilled to report when the sugar glider had her drum solo nonna exclaimed loudly ‘oh i LOVE that.’”
In March, Grande’s Nonna made headlines by becoming the oldest artist ever to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 at age 98. She was featured on Grande’s track “Ordinary Things,” which debuted at No. 55.
The movie Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu, is based on the beloved Broadway musical and tells the story of events in Oz before Dorothy’s arrival. Grande stars alongside Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba. The film premiered on Friday, making an impressive $162 million at the global box office during its opening weekend, marking the third-highest opening weekend of 2024 behind Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2.
