Pakistani American Press Association (PAPA) Condemns Arrest and Abduction of Journalists in Pakistan
Washington, DC, November 28, 2024 – The Pakistani American Press Association (PAPA) has issued a strong statement condemning the escalating attacks on press freedom in Pakistan, particularly the recent arrest and abduction of senior journalist Matiullah Jan.
In an official press release, PAPA General Secretary Yousuf Choudhry called the actions a “blatant violation of fundamental human rights” and an assault on journalistic freedom. “The systematic targeting of journalists through arrests, abductions, and intimidation tactics undermines transparency, accountability, and the essence of a democratic society,” the statement said.
The association has demanded the immediate release of all detained journalists and the safe return of abducted media professionals. It also urged the Pakistani government to take substantial steps to protect journalists and ensure their safety while holding those responsible for these violations accountable.
“We stand in solidarity with Matiullah Jan, his family, and colleagues, along with all journalists who continue their essential work despite facing threats and harassment,” the statement added.
PAPA emphasized that freedom of the press is critical for the health of any democracy and warned against further erosion of these values in Pakistan.
