The government of Laos has expressed its deep sadness over the deaths of foreign tourists in Vang Vieng, with the toll from a suspected methanol poisoning incident rising to six.
Deaths of Foreign Tourists in Vang Vieng
A group of foreign tourists, including two Danish citizens, one American, a Briton, and two Australians, fell ill after a night out in the popular backpacker destination of Vang Vieng. They were quickly rushed to the hospital, where the latest victim, Australian Holly Bowles, passed away in a Bangkok hospital on Friday, surrounded by her family.
Laos Government’s Response and Investigation
In a statement released on Saturday, Laos’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered “sincere sympathy and deepest condolences” to the families of the deceased. The ministry confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the incident, which is believed to involve methanol poisoning.
Australia Urges Transparent Investigation
The Australian government has called on Laotian authorities for a full and transparent investigation into the tragic incident.
