Huawei Targets 100,000 Apps for Harmony OS in the Coming Year
Huawei, the Chinese technology giant, has announced an ambitious target to reach 100,000 applications for its Harmony operating system within the next year. The company aims to strengthen its self-reliance in the face of ongoing U.S. sanctions that have forced it to accelerate the development of its own software ecosystem. Currently, Huawei has more than 15,000 apps running on Harmony OS, which meet the basic needs of consumers. However, to truly compete in the global market, the company acknowledges the need for more personalized and specialized apps.
Huawei’s Chairman, Xu Zhijun, revealed at a conference that the company is working towards this goal with a sense of urgency. “For the Harmony ecosystem to mature and effectively meet consumer needs, 100,000 apps is the milestone we are targeting within the next six to twelve months,” Xu stated. This ambitious plan underscores Huawei’s commitment to achieving technological independence, especially as geopolitical tensions between China and the U.S. continue to rise.
A Push for Home-Grown Technology Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Huawei’s push to develop Harmony OS and its associated app ecosystem is partly a response to U.S. sanctions that have blocked access to essential services, such as Google’s Android platform, for Huawei devices. Launched in 2019, Harmony OS was designed as an alternative to Android after Huawei’s access to the latter was restricted due to security concerns. While the operating system has made significant progress, Huawei acknowledges that it will only succeed if a robust app ecosystem is built around it.
According to Xu, “For any operating system, no matter how advanced it is, it would be of no value if no one uses it.” This sentiment reflects Huawei’s growing realization that a strong app offering is essential for the success of Harmony OS, which is why the company is actively encouraging developers to contribute to the ecosystem.
Call to Action for Developers and Consumers
Huawei is appealing to developers to help expand the Harmony app ecosystem, emphasizing that the system’s maturity depends on widespread usage. Xu also called on government agencies, state-owned companies, and social organizations to adopt Harmony OS in their daily operations. “The more people use it, the faster it will mature,” he said, urging consumers to be patient as the system continues to evolve.
In the face of mounting external pressure, Huawei remains resolute in its goal of building a competitive, self-sustaining operating system. “No way back leads to victory,” Xu remarked, expressing confidence that Huawei’s investment in developing the Harmony ecosystem will pay off, making what once seemed impossible a reality.
