Imran Khan Insists on Immediate Release to Call Off Protest
Informal negotiations between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership and the government have reached an impasse. A source close to the talks revealed that PTI chairman Imran Khan has demanded his immediate release from jail by Friday to cancel the planned November 24 protest march to Islamabad. However, the government has not agreed to this demand, offering only vague assurances about potential relief for the former prime minister in the near future.
Government’s Proposal for Public Rally
In response, the government suggested that PTI hold a public rally in Sangjani and ensure the protesters disperse peacefully on the same day. This move was seen as a gesture to create a conducive environment for future discussions. The government also emphasized that any further talks would hinge on PTI’s willingness to publicly declare a readiness for formal dialogue and call off the protest.
Imran Khan’s Stance on Protest
Despite the government’s offer, Imran Khan has remained firm on his decision to proceed with the protest march as planned. A senior PTI leader confirmed that Imran’s release is crucial for calling off the protest, as the party believes the protest is an essential step in their political strategy. The PTI leader added that while most senior members of the party favor dialogue, Imran’s insistence on holding the protest without prior consultation with party leaders has created tension.
Call for Confidence-Building Measures
Barrister Saif, an adviser to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, noted that the government should take concrete steps, such as releasing jailed PTI leaders, to build confidence and move the dialogue forward. Imran has already appointed key representatives, including KP CM Ali Amin Gandapur and PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, to represent him in potential negotiations.
Imran Khan’s Comments from Jail
Speaking from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, Imran confirmed that he received an “offer” from the government to postpone the Islamabad protest. He remarked that he was told everything would be resolved if he accepted the offer, but expressed frustration that no action had been taken despite a bail approval from the Islamabad High Court. Imran stated that the government had missed the opportunity to act on the matter promptly and implied that the government’s interest in dialogue might be insincere.
