Key leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have strongly criticized Bushra Bibi’s claims accusing Saudi Arabia of playing a role in the ousting of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in 2022. They emphasized the need to protect Pakistan’s foreign relations from political exploitation.
In a rare video statement, Bushra Bibi alleged Saudi involvement in her husband’s political downfall. In response, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar expressed regret, labeling the remarks as an attempt to exploit diplomatic ties for political purposes. “It is deeply unfortunate to target Saudi Arabia, a longstanding ally, for personal political agendas,” Dar remarked, emphasizing the historic bond and mutual respect between the two nations.
Dar further highlighted Saudi Arabia’s consistent support for Pakistan, stating, “We take pride in their progress and prosperity and value their assistance during our difficult times.”
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership, accusing them of resorting to religious manipulation to gain political traction. “Now, they have started playing the Shariah card for personal benefit,” Asif said, condemning the exploitation of religious sentiment for political gain.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari described Bushra Bibi’s remarks as a dangerous and reckless attack on an Islamic ally, terming it a “self-destructive move” against Saudi Arabia, a cornerstone of the Muslim world. She added, “These baseless allegations undermine Pakistan’s relationship with a key partner in the Muslim Ummah.”
Information Minister Atta Tarar also rejected the claims, calling them “disgraceful.” He pointed out the irony of accusing Saudi Arabia, a nation where Bushra Bibi’s daughter married, of interference. “The same country she accuses gave them gifts, which Bushra Bibi later sold in the black market,” Tarar alleged.
Pakistan Ulema Council Chairman Allama Tahir Ashrafi dismissed the accusations as unfounded, praising Saudi Arabia’s warm reception of Imran Khan and his delegation during official visits. “I was present during those visits, and there was nothing but respect and hospitality from Saudi Arabia,” Ashrafi stated.
Ashrafi questioned the credibility of the claims, asserting that Saudi Arabia’s implementation of Islamic law remains unshaken. “Which Shariah reforms did PTI bring that would pose a threat to Saudi Arabia?” he asked. He further accused certain factions of spreading false propaganda against Saudi Arabia to appease hostile forces.
He concluded, “Saudi Arabia’s growing investments in Pakistan are a sign of their friendship, and these baseless allegations are an effort to damage that bond.”
