Pakistan : During an oath-taking ceremony held at President House in Islamabad on Saturday, Justice Yahya Afridi was sworn in as the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).
President Asif Ali Zardari administered the oath of office to him, and he will serve as CJP for three years, until October 26, 2027.
Equity Afridi was selected by a Unique Parliamentary Board (SPC), which was framed under the as of late enacted 26th Amendment.
CJP Afridi’s ancestor Equity Qazi Faez Isa, who was confirmed on Sept 17, 2023, was formally offered a goodbye yesterday during a full court reference where senior legal counselors related his residency’s features.
Along with other Supreme Court judges, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the chiefs of the three services, including Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, attended today’s oath-taking ceremony.
PM Shehbaz wrote in a post on X praising the new CJP, ” The judiciary will be guided in the direction of upholding justice and strengthening the rule of law by his experience, wisdom, and legal knowledge.
I am certain that, under his direction, the courts will continue to serve the Pakistani people in an honest and equitable manner. He has my best wishes for a fruitful future.”
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, a senior puisne judge who would have been the CJP had the 26th Amendment not been in place, was away for Umrah with his family, so he was unable to attend yesterday’s and today’s events.
However, the majority of the other SC judges, including Justices Munib Akhtar, Ayesha Malik, and Athar Minallah, who were absent from yesterday’s full court reference, were observed present at the oath-taking ceremony.
Justices Aminuddin Khan, Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, and Shahid Waheed were among the other judges who were present at the ceremony today. Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, a former CJP, was also seen sitting with them.
