On Monday, US emissary to Lebanon Amos Hochstein said Washington was looking for a finish to the conflict in Lebanon “straightaway” as he pushed for a truce in Beirut.
Israel turned its attention to Hezbollah in Lebanon in September, intensifying its attacks on the group’s strongholds throughout the country and sending in ground troops at the end of the previous month after fighting Hamas for more than a year in the Palestinian territory of Gaza.
Joint military exercises between Iran and Saudi Arabia are planned, according to an Iranian report that has not been confirmed by Riyadh. This would be a first for the regional powerhouses.
In 2016, the two rivals in the Middle East, who had been at odds for a long time in conflict zones throughout the region, severed diplomatic ties. However, a surprise deal mediated by China saw Iran and Saudi Arabia resume their relations last year.
The Iranian news agency ISNA quoted Admiral Shahram Irani, commander of Iran’s navy, as saying, “Saudi Arabia has asked that we organize joint exercises in the Red Sea.”
