NBC News, citing sources, reported on Monday that former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).
According to the NBC report, Weinstein is undergoing treatment for CML, a type of bone marrow cancer, while incarcerated at Rikers Island in New York for his rape trial.
Craig Rothfeld, Weinstein’s legitimate medical services delegate, declined a solicitation for input when asked by Reuters on the situation with his wellbeing, refering to regard for his security.
His lawyers had previously stated that Weinstein, 72, has been plagued by health issues. In September, he was rushed from Rikers Island jail to the hospital for heart surgery.
In a case that sparked the #MeToo movement, in February 2020, Weinstein was found guilty of rape. He had previously denied having any non-consensual sexual encounters with anyone.
In April, the conviction was overturned by the New York Court of Appeals because it was determined that Weinstein did not receive a fair trial because a judge allowed testimony from accusers against whom he was not officially charged. He is in jail anticipating a retrial.
Weinstein actually faces two other lawbreaker counts from a previous prosecution where he likewise argued not blameworthy, including another first-degree criminal sexual demonstration charge and a third-degree assault charge. He pleaded not guilty to a second charge of sexual assault in September.
According to statements made by his representatives in the past, Weinstein has diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, and fluid in his heart and lungs.
