LAHORE: Maj Gen (retd) Dr. Azhar Mehmood Kayani, Punjab Health Advisor, has emphasized the significance of medical educators and stakeholders in improving hospital healthcare and education.
Dr. Kayani emphasized, during a comprehensive review of the Punjab Institute of Neurosciences (PINS) and the Lahore General Hospital (LGH), that diligence and integrity are necessary for enhancing the dignity of the medical profession and effectively serving humanity.
Ameer Uddin Medical College Principal Dr. Muhammad Al-Fareed Zafar, PINS Executive Director Prof. Muhammad Asif Bashir, and Medical Superintendents Dr. Frayad Hussain and Dr. Umar Ishaq also attended the review meeting.
Following the meeting, Dr. Kayani presided over a session of the LGH academic council in which Prof. Zafar gave an overview of departmental performance. He said that the Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) receives over Rs10 million annually for research and that laparoscopic techniques are widely used in gynecology, surgery, and other specialties to shorten patient recovery times.
Prof. Zafar was commended by Dr. Kayani for implementing cutting-edge laparoscopic procedures at LGH. He also said that he would recommend increasing the number of Nursing College seats at LGH from 200 to 300 in order to give female students more opportunities.
Additionally, Dr. Kayani mentioned the implementation of an integrated strategy to address issues facing the hospital and enhance patient care. He emphasized the creation of a system for monitoring and auditing the referral process from district hospitals to teaching hospitals to ensure that patients can get treatment without having to deal with unnecessary obstacles.
Punjab’s need for reforms in medical education was highlighted.
