BALLERUP: Dutch cyclist Harrie Lavreysen on Wednesday brought home his fourteenth big showdown track title with triumph in the group run occasion, equalling the unequaled record of Frenchman Arnaud Tournant.
Between now and the conclusion of the championships in Denmark, the 27-year-old, a five-time Olympic champion, will have a number of chances to set the record for himself.
On Friday, he will compete in the time trial, and on Sunday, he will compete in the individual sprint.
The Dutch team, led by Jeffrey Hoogland and Roy van den Berg, defeated Australia in the final on Wednesday, while Japan defeated Britain to win the bronze medal.
Lavreysen currently holds three keirin titles, five individual titles, and six team sprint titles.
Between 1997 and 2008, Tournant won nine world titles in the team sprint, one in the individual event, and four in the time trial.
Lavreysen has become the most successful Dutch athlete in the history of the Summer Games thanks to his incredible five-year record, which includes a hat trick (individual and team sprint, keirin) at the Paris Olympics in August.
Britain won the sprint in the women’s competition, beating the Netherlands and winning the bronze medal over Australia.
Lorena Wiebes, a sprinter from the Netherlands who qualified for the championships in 2024 with 22 victories, won her first scratch world title.
The American Jennifer Valente was defeated by Wiebes, and Ally Wollaston of New Zealand took home the bronze.
