Monday, India announced that it would be withdrawing its envoy to Canada due to Ottawa’s investigation of him and other diplomats as “persons of interest” following the murder of a Sikh separatist leader last year.
After Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that there were “credible allegations” linking Indian intelligence to the crime, the murder of Canadian Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023 shattered diplomatic ties with India.
India’s ambassador’s decision to leave is a significant step up in the tensions that exist between the two countries.
In a statement, the foreign ministry of New Delhi stated, “We have no faith in the current Canadian government’s commitment to ensure their security.”
