As contract talks continue, dockworkers at the Port of Montreal halted all overtime work this morning in an effort to exert pressure on their employers.
The Maritime Employers Association confirmed that the union representing nearly 1,200 longshore workers at the port’s overtime strike began on time at 7 a.m. Eastern Time (ET).
The union has stated that scheduling continues to be a major obstacle in the bargaining sessions, which were reopened last week with the assistance of federal mediators.
This week, the Maritime Employers Association retaliated against the union by announcing that employees who work shifts with crews that are not complete would not be compensated for their efforts to impede or stop the flow of freight.
According to the association, which represents terminal operators and shipping companies, the suspension of overtime work will have a significant impact on operations.
After a three-day strike last week at two terminals that handle 41% of container traffic at the country’s second-largest port, the limited job action follows.
