The JPP is a non-profit legal action firm with its headquarters in Lahore that fights for the most vulnerable Pakistani prisoners who are facing the most severe punishments at home and abroad.
The third edition of the non-profit organization’s annual report, titled Death Penalty in Pakistan: Data Mapping of Capital Punishment in honor of the 22nd International Day Against the Death Penalty.
In Pakistan, there were 6,161 people awaiting execution, up from 6,039 in 2023, according to the report. With 2505 inmates, Punjab had the highest number, followed by KP with 2311.
The number stood in contrast to previous patterns, such as the 3,226 people on death row in 2022.
The 2024 edition gathered both quantitative and qualitative data to provide a comprehensive look at Pakistan’s death penalty landscape.
In addition to providing a statistical overview of death row, the report examines the underlying problems in Pakistan’s criminal justice system that support the use of the death penalty, according to the statement.
According to the report, Pakistan was ranked as “one of the highest users of the death penalty globally,” which is a “sobering statistic” that demonstrates “the urgent need for reform.”
It stated that Pakistan “remains one of the most prolific users of capital punishment, with over 31 crimes punishable by death,” despite the fact that it has not used the death penalty since December 2019.
On the NGO’s digital platform, the public could access the report.
In the statement, it was stated that “we invite policymakers, advocates, and the general public to engage with this data as part of a broader dialogue on justice reform”
It went on to say that, “Through this report, JPP seeks to magnify the individual stories behind these statistics, highlighting the often overlooked human toll of state-sanctioned executions,” and that this was the purpose of the report.
