Babar Azam announced on social media that he has decided to resign from the captaincy of the Pakistan team.
He mentioned that he wants to focus on his role as a player and spend more time with his family.
Babar expressed pride in what he has achieved so far and stated that he is ready to fulfill his responsibilities as a player.
According to sources, Babar made this decision after consulting with his family and close friends. He had been discussing the captaincy with them for several days.
Sources also indicated that Babar’s close friends within the national team had suggested that he step down.
Furthermore, it is reported that Babar’s refusal to captain the team in the Champions Cup was seen as a first step toward resigning from the captaincy.
It is important to note that Babar Azam stepped down from the captaincy in all formats last November after the team’s defeat in the World Cup. Following this, the PCB appointed Shaheen Afridi as the T20 captain and Shan Masood as the Test captain, but no decision was made regarding the ODI captaincy.
However, in March of this year, Babar was reinstated as the captain of Pakistan’s white-ball cricket.
Under Babar’s leadership, Pakistan played 43 ODIs, winning 26 and losing 15. Additionally, in 85 T20 International matches, Pakistan won 48 and lost 29.
