The country claiming to be the world’s largest economy, India, is grappling with soaring unemployment and poverty across several states.
While the Modi government asserts its position as the world’s largest economy, India is experiencing severe instability due to rampant unemployment. Recent statistics from the Labor Force Survey have exposed the hollowness of these claims.
According to the report, unemployment and poverty under Modi’s leadership have reached alarming levels. In the Indian state of Kerala, the unemployment rate among youth aged 15 to 29 stands at a staggering 30%. Similarly, in Kerala, the unemployment rate for women is 47%, while for men, it is 19%.
Data from the Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) indicates that despite Modi’s grand promises, there has been no change in the unemployment rate for the years 2023 and 2024, with the overall unemployment rate increasing from 2.9% to 3.2%.
The report also reveals high unemployment rates among youth in regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh. Previously, the India Employment Report stated that 83% of the unemployed population in India consists of young people. Frustrated by unemployment and the government’s indifference, educated youth have been compelled to take on low-paying jobs.
Research shows that nearly 70% of construction workers in India are forced to work for minimum wages due to unemployment. As joblessness continues to rise, many individuals are illegally migrating to the U.S. and the U.K., while human trafficking is also on the rise as a consequence of growing unemployment.
