Montreal: If you care about the environment, you need to think twice before using AI technology.
Researcher Sasha Luciani has raised awareness about the environmental impact of this new technology, warning that generative artificial intelligence consumes 30 times more energy compared to traditional search engines.
According to a 2024 report by American magazine TIME, Russian-born Canadian computer scientist Sasha Luciani is recognized as one of the 100 most influential people in the world regarding AI. He has spent years analyzing the energy emissions of programs like ChatGPT and Midjourney.
During the All in Artificial Intelligence conference in Montreal, Sasha expressed his disappointment that generative AI is used for internet searches.
He added that the language models on which AI programs are based require vast computing power and powerful servers to train on billions of data points, which negatively impacts the environment.
