Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in London on Saturday for a brief stopover before heading to the United States for the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, scheduled for September 23 to 27.
The Prime Minister plans to spend two days in London, having landed at Heathrow Airport on Saturday evening. He was seen heading to his apartment near Edgware Road in central London.
According to a spokesperson from the Foreign Office, during his time at the UNGA, the Prime Minister will meet with global leaders, including the UN Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly. He will also participate in discussions addressing rising sea levels and leadership for peace.
The Prime Minister aims to urge the international community to take decisive action against climate change and combat Islamophobia. Additionally, he will emphasize the need for reforms in the international financial system and stress the importance of resolving long-standing issues, such as the conflicts in Palestine and Jammu & Kashmir.
While at the UNGA, the Prime Minister will attend several high-level meetings, including the High-level Meeting on Existential Threats Posed by Sea-level Rise and an Open Debate on Leadership for Peace at the UN Security Council. He will reaffirm his support for the UN’s efforts in promoting global peace, security, and prosperity.
Before his departure for New York, the Prime Minister expressed his commitment on social media platform “X” to advocate for Pakistan’s stance on international matters.
Earlier, Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch announced that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will not attend the UNGA due to critical diplomatic commitments and preparations for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Islamabad.
