Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York from September 23 to 27, 2024, as announced by the Foreign Office (FO) on Thursday.
Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar and senior government officials, PM Sharif will reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and support for the UN’s role in promoting global peace, security, and prosperity during his address at the assembly.
He will also address long-standing issues on the UN Security Council’s agenda, including the situations in Palestine and Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Additionally, the Prime Minister will participate in several high-level meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA session, focusing on existential threats such as sea-level rise and engaging in an open debate on leadership for peace within the UN Security Council.
Bilateral meetings with world leaders, discussions with the UN Secretary-General, and interactions with the Pakistani diaspora are also part of the agenda.
Meanwhile, DPM Dar will take part in various high-level events and bilateral discussions. He will represent Pakistan at the Summit of the Future convened by the UN Secretary-General on September 22, as well as attend several ministerial meetings, including those related to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Non-Aligned Movement.
The spokesperson emphasized that the PM’s participation will showcase Pakistan’s policy perspective on critical global issues and reinforce the country’s commitment to the UN Charter and international peace and security.
