Multiple women have accused Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed, the former owner of London’s prestigious Harrods department store, of rape and sexual assault, according to a BBC report released on Thursday.
The allegations, detailed in a BBC documentary and podcast, come as part of an ongoing examination of high-profile figures following the #MeToo movement’s rise in 2017. Al-Fayed, who passed away last year at the age of 94, was a significant figure in British society, notably for his ownership of Harrods and his association with Princess Diana.
The investigation reveals that more than 20 women have reported instances of assault and physical violence at properties in London and Paris. The documentary “Al Fayed: Predator at Harrods,” set to air later Thursday, and the “World of Secrets” podcast include claims from five women who allege they were raped by Fayed.
Previously, Fayed faced allegations of sexual assault and groping, but a 2015 police investigation into a rape claim did not result in charges. Harrods’ current owners have expressed their shock and regret, apologizing for failing the victims.
Harrods has begun settling claims from women who allege sexual abuse by Fayed dating back to the late 1980s. Fayed sold Harrods in 2010 to Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund for approximately $2.2 billion.
