ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) ramped up its efforts on Sunday to halt the government’s introduction of a contentious constitutional amendment. This marked one of the party’s busiest days since the February 8 elections.
The day-long push culminated with Barrister Gohar Ali Khan’s participation in a special committee meeting led by PPP’s Syed Khursheed Shah at the National Assembly late Sunday night. Earlier, PTI leaders focused on persuading JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, engaging in talks that lasted over an hour.
Footage aired showing PTI leaders praying with the JUI-F chief as they sought his support in opposing the amendment. Party insiders revealed that efforts were underway to ensure PTI legislators avoided the upcoming Senate and National Assembly sessions, though some lawmakers were reportedly unreachable.
Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, addressing the media after meeting the Maulana, stressed that constitutional amendments should prioritize national interest, not personal gain. He criticized the government’s secrecy around the proposed changes, warning that the legislation would damage the judiciary’s reputation.
Separately, concerns were raised over the disappearance of PTI MNA Aurengzeb Khichi, whose family reported him missing for several days. PTI leader Shibli Fraz had previously accused the ruling coalition of pressuring party lawmakers to secure votes for the amendment.
