WASHINGTON: On Friday, former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney announced that he will vote for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris rather than Republican former President Donald Trump in the upcoming November 5 U.S. elections. This endorsement follows a similar declaration from his daughter, Liz Cheney, earlier this week.
Trump and Harris are currently in a close race, with a debate scheduled for next week. Some Republicans disillusioned with Trump’s influence over their party and his actions have started supporting Harris, including several former aides of Presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush. Dick Cheney served as Vice President under George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009.
Cheney has faced criticism for his role in the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which resulted in significant civilian casualties and human rights abuses. The Iraq War, in particular, was based on incorrect claims of weapons of mass destruction.
Liz Cheney, the former vice president’s daughter and a former congresswoman, has also been an outspoken critic of Trump, especially regarding the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack by Trump supporters.
