DUBLIN: On Saturday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer commenced the first visit by a British leader to Ireland in five years, aiming to “reset” the strained post-Brexit relationship between the two nations.
Described by Downing Street as a “historic moment,” the visit reflects a renewed effort to mend ties that had deteriorated under the previous Conservative government. Irish counterpart Simon Harris greeted Starmer in Dublin, and the two leaders engaged in initial discussions, emphasizing the need for a practical and meaningful reset of their relationship.
Harris highlighted the importance of embedding peace, prosperity, mutual respect, and friendship into their renewed partnership, while Starmer underscored the significance of making the reset both substantial and impactful.
The leaders also discussed plans for an annual summit, with the inaugural meeting scheduled for March 2025. Following their talks, Starmer was set to participate in a round table with business leaders.
