Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced the launch of a new weapon, the “Palianytsia” drone missile, during Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations on Saturday. Zelenskiy claimed that this advanced missile, which he described as faster and more powerful than previous drones, would enable Ukraine to strike deeper into Russian territory.
In a pointed address, Zelenskiy mocked Russian President Vladimir Putin, referring to him as a “sick old man from Red Square” and dismissing his threats as ineffectual. The new missile has reportedly already hit a target in Russia, although specifics on the strike’s location were not disclosed.
The missile’s name, Palianytsia, is culturally significant in Ukraine, symbolizing a traditional type of Ukrainian bread. Zelenskiy noted its importance as a symbol of resistance and cultural identity, joking that Russia would struggle not only to defend against it but also to pronounce its name.
In a related development, Zelenskiy promoted Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi to the rank of general, recognizing his role in Ukraine’s significant cross-border operation into Russia’s Kursk region. This operation, described as Ukraine’s largest invasion of Russian territory since World War II, aims to prevent further Russian advances into northern Ukraine.
Polish President Andrzej Duda confirmed that PT-91 Twardy tanks, supplied by Poland, were actively engaged in the Kursk region, underscoring Poland’s support for Ukraine. Despite Russia’s condemnation of the use of Western weapons and a vow for retaliation, Ukraine remains resolute in its defense and territorial goals.
Amidst the heightened tensions and ongoing conflict, Zelenskiy also ratified the Rome Statute to signal Ukraine’s intent to join the International Criminal Court and enacted legislation banning pro-Russian religious groups. Additionally, both Ukraine and Russia reported a successful prisoner exchange involving 115 individuals.
As the Independence Day celebrations coincided with warnings of potential Russian missile and drone attacks, Zelenskiy’s announcements and actions reflect Ukraine’s steadfast commitment to resisting aggression and securing international support.
