LONDON: Manchester United suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion, while Erling Haaland’s hat-trick guided Premier League champions Manchester City to a 4-1 triumph over Ipswich Town on Saturday.
At the Amex Stadium, Joao Pedro’s stoppage-time header sealed Brighton’s victory after Manchester United had equalized through Amad Diallo. United had earlier conceded to Danny Welbeck’s 32nd-minute goal, which came from Kaoru Mitoma’s cross. Despite Diallo’s equalizer, which was deflected in off Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke, United saw a late goal by Alejandro Garnacho ruled out for offside by VAR. Pedro’s header from Simon Adingra’s cross secured Brighton’s win, keeping them undefeated under manager Fabian Hurzeler, who has a perfect record since his appointment.
At the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City overcame an early deficit to Ipswich Town with a flurry of goals. Ipswich’s Sammie Szmodics gave them an early lead, but City responded with three goals in four minutes. Haaland equalized with a penalty, and then Kevin De Bruyne capitalized on a mistake by Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric. Haaland added two more goals, completing his hat-trick in the 88th minute.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Yves Bissouma, recalled after a suspension, scored a stunning goal to spark a 4-0 victory over Everton. Son Heung-min added a second goal after robbing Jordan Pickford, and Cristian Romero and Son completed the rout with goals in the second half.
West Ham United secured their first win under Julen Lopetegui with second-half goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen in a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace.
Fulham edged Leicester City 2-1 with Alex Iwobi’s late goal after Emile Smith Rowe’s opener for Fulham was canceled out by Wout Faes.
Nottingham Forest claimed a 1-0 win at Southampton thanks to Morgan Gibbs-White’s decisive strike.
