Chicago police reported 74 arrests related to pro-Palestinian protests that have taken place throughout the week. The demonstrations, which coincided with the Democratic National Convention at the United Center, included a large rally in front of the Israeli Consulate, where thousands voiced their support for Palestine and called for an end to U.S. support for Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Police Superintendent Larry Snelling noted that four individuals required hospital attention for medication issues. Despite some injuries to officers, they declined medical treatment to remain with their colleagues. Mayor Brandon Johnson praised the handling of the protests, emphasizing the balance between maintaining safety and protecting protesters’ rights.
The demonstrators carried Palestinian flags and held signs with slogans such as “End US Aid to Israel” and “Free Palestine Now!” The protests reflect ongoing global concerns over Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in significant casualties and a severe humanitarian crisis.
