India is experiencing a troubling surge in gang rape cases, prompting widespread protests and strikes across the country. These incidents have intensified concerns about women’s safety during Narendra Modi’s third term in office.
In a recent case, Dehradun police reported the arrest of five individuals, including three Uttarakhand Transport Corporation employees, for allegedly gang-raping a 16-year-old girl on a bus at the Dehradun terminal. The Dehradun Child Welfare Committee revealed that the victim is suffering from severe mental distress and trauma following the attack.
Earlier, the gang rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata further ignited public outrage.
The growing number of rape cases and violent crimes against women has sparked nationwide demonstrations, with citizens demanding justice and stronger safety measures. Critics accuse the government of failing to uphold law and order, citing the increasing frequency of such crimes as evidence of this failure.
India’s international reputation has been tarnished, with some labeling it as the “rape capital” due to the high incidence of reported sexual assaults. This crisis has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of current policies and protective measures for women.
