LAHORE: Pakistan’s U-18 volleyball team has achieved a historic milestone by securing a spot in the World Championship for the first time. This accomplishment follows their impressive performance in the Asian Volleyball Championship, where they earned a bronze medal and overcame strong opponents such as India, South Korea, and Japan.
Coach Saeed Ahmad is optimistic about the team’s potential to win a medal at the World Championship but stresses the importance of government support.
“Technically and skill-wise, our boys are outstanding and exhibit excellent team chemistry,” Ahmad told Dawn during a prize distribution ceremony organized by the Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF), where the U-18 team received cash prizes.
“If we receive government backing for at least two European tours before the World Championship, we have the potential to secure a medal.”
The team’s qualification marks Pakistan’s debut in the World Championship. While every player attended the event, captain Talal Ahmed was absent due to a throat infection. Vice-captain Khizar Hayat, speaking to Dawn, emphasized the need for international exposure to compete against top teams.
“We need a few tours to strong volleyball nations before the World Championship,” said the 16-year-old Hayat, who plays for Wapda on a monthly stipend of Rs25,000.
The PVF has been supporting the team, but financial constraints remain a challenge. Coach Saeed, who represented Pakistan from 1996 to 2006, has appealed to Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem to help raise awareness for sports like volleyball.
“Arshad understands our struggles, and his support could make a significant difference,” Saeed added.
PVF Chairman Mohammad Yaqoob announced a cash prize of Rs2 million for the team, with each member receiving Rs100,000. The World Championship venue will be decided in November, and the team is eager to make a strong impact on the global stage.
