The City of Dallas Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting at Reverchon Recreation Center at 6 p.m. on Wednesday to discuss safety enhancements for a roadway identified as particularly hazardous.
The Maple Avenue Safety Project is a key component of the city’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to eliminate all traffic-related fatalities and reduce serious injuries from crashes by 50% within six years.
City research indicates that pedestrians represent 30% of those killed or severely injured in traffic accidents. Maple Avenue, stretching between Oak Lawn and Mockingbird Lane, is considered a high-risk area for pedestrian and vehicle collisions.
The proposed improvements include safety upgrades along the two-and-a-half-mile stretch of Maple Avenue. The project will focus on long-term mobility enhancements, while short-term safety measures such as pedestrian countdown timers, improved traffic signal timing, better pedestrian crossings, and additional street lighting will be implemented concurrently.
Plans also include adding a dedicated pedestrian and bike lane.
For those unable to attend the meeting, a survey will be available online until August 18.
Wednesday’s meeting follows a previous public forum held in February 2023. The city has conducted further analysis to evaluate the potential impacts of the planned improvements. Currently, the project is in the early design phase, with construction expected to begin in about two years.
